Mimbres Design Pot Holder: MAN SPEARING FISH
Product Description
These designs were painted by the Mimbres a thousand years ago on the insides of ceramic bowls. These prehistoric peoples lived between 1000 AD and 1280 AD in the Mimbres River Valley of southwestern New Mexico.
This image has been interpreted by some researchers to represent a Mimbreno fisherman encountering a whale. Trading expeditions to the Sea of Cortez and even to the Pacific Ocean did occur and an encounter with a beached whale may have actually happened. Or, a more likely scenario is that this is an exaggeration by a boastful fisherman.
